The morphological organization of the earthworm body wall muscles, both contracted and decontracted, is studied. These muscles are helical in type; their primary myofilaments are 6 µ long, 350-400 Å thick, and show a paramyosinic structure. The morphological properties and functions of the Z elements and of the sarcoplasmic reticulum are discussed, and the changes in the fine structure of the muscles, are analyzed in relation to the contraction process.
