Sunto

The longitudinal muscles of Sea-cucumber Holothuria tubulosa are constituted by unicellular fibres, grouped into bundles of 3-10 cells. Every bundle is surrounded by a layer of collagen fibrils, parallel to the muscle fibers. These fibers are joined to one other by means of some cytoplasmic elongations, budding from the cell sides, which contain several glycogen granules and a few mitochondria. The fibrous part of the cell consists of a double system of myofilaments, which seem to be arranged in a random disposition. The primary myofilaments are 200-500 Å thick. They are encircled by 10-12 secondary filaments of about 70 Å. Pentalaminar junction-like structures are also described in this report. The possibility to relate them to an intracellular impulse propagation, is here discussed.
