Sunto

The thoracic muscles of Orihoptera, Acrida sp. and Pamphagus sp. were examined by electron microscopy. The muscle fibres of Acrida are divided into thin myofibrils, and contain a great deal of mitochondria. The primary filaments have a diameter of 120 Å and the primary/secondary filament ratio is 1:3. In Pamphagus the myofibrils are irregularly shaped, and mitochondria are very few. The primary filaments have a diameter of 180-200 Å, and the primary/secondary filament ratio is 1:6. The morphological features of the sarcoplasmic reticulum and T system, as well as the tracheoles distribution, are also described.
