Cantor ebbe subito chiaro, all'inizio della sua costruzione dei numeri transfiniti, nei primi anni ottanta del diciannovesimo secolo, che non tutte le collezioni concepibili possono essere ammesse come insiemi; la totalità degli ordinali era per lui un simbolo dell'Assoluto; in matematica conduceva ad antinomie; cercò di escluderle plasmando un'adeguata ma ambigua definizione di “insieme”; negli ultimi anni del secolo, nella corrispondenza con Hilbert e Dedekind, egli fu tentato tuttavia dall'usare tali collezioni per chiudere le grandi questioni aperte della teoria, come la confrontabilità dei cardinali e il teorema del buon ordine, che saranno chiarite in seguito da Zermelo.
