Nell'ambito della cosiddetta Ecologia del Paesaggio e delle ricerche volte allo studio della stabilità ecologica dei sistemi ambientali, viene proposta una rassegna di vari modelli matematici che si sono rivelati utili per rappresentare e valutare le dinamiche relative alle trasformazioni nel tempo di un determinato territorio. A scopo esemplificativo viene presentata una simulazione dedotta da un caso studio realizzato a partire da dati reali raccolti in un comprensorio di alcuni comuni dell'area metropolitana di Torino. Ulteriori possibili sviluppi di modellistica matematica e le loro ricadute nell'ambito delle politiche territoriali vengono infine discussi.
