This work deals with the first results of glaciological researches carried out on the Baltoro Glacier (Karakorum, Pakistan) during a scientific-alpinistic expedition in 1985. The measurements of the differential ablation made near the base camp at 5.150 a.s.l. are here presented (2,8 cm of diurnal ablation on clean ice; 0,7 cm with the cover of 20 cm of coarse debris). The role of the differential ablation in the development of the main features of the supraglacial morphology on the Baltoro Glacier (glacier tables, medial moraines, ice pinnacles) is then briefly exposed.
