The results of detailed chemical and physical investigations on buried andosols interbedded in Mt. Artemisio tephra (Alban Hills) are presented. Very high values of optical density of the humic acids extracts were observed, indicating a high degree of condensation of the aromatic rings, a feature characterizing many intervolcanic palaeosols from central and southern Italy so far investigated.
