Data on the genetic epidemiology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (X-linked recessive lethal) in nine Italian Regions are presented together for the first time. The highest incidence rates were recorded in Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia and Venetia (about 27/100.000 male live births). Slightly lower incidence rates (about 21/100.000 male live births) were recorded in the South Italy; the difference seems to be due to underascertainement. A genetic counselling programme, performed in Venetia since 1974, succeded in reducing significantly the incidence rate for the disease in a ten years period.
