In 1973-1974 twenty samples of mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, were periodically collected from the submerged portion of an offshore survey platform in the Upper Adriatic (Gulf of Venice) about eight miles equidistant from the port entrances of Lido and Malamocco. Analysis of the samples has indicated rather low levels of contamination with fossil fuels, but a significant level of some hydrocarbons of recent biogenic origin, probably accumulated from suspended material utilized as food. Using gas-chromatographic techniques with columns of increasing polarity, the latter compounds were identified and their retention indices determined. The concentration of aliphatics in mussels collected from this station had a mean of $0.65 \pm 0.11$ mg/100 g wet weight. This value was used as a reference base for estimating the degree of pollution in the Lagoon of Venice as indicated by contamination levels in mussels collected from various areas therein.
