Hermaphrodite specimens of Dentalium entalis were found in the gulf of Naples; they produced eggs and sperm simultaneously, which were capable of self fertilization and norm al development. A histological analysis of the gonad both of hermaphrodites and of normal males and females has been carried out. The aim of this study was to relate the hermaphrodite condition of Dentalium to that described by many authors in other Molluscs. On the basis of such a comparative study, the hermaphroditism of Dentalium entalis seems to be occasional.
