Morphine and heroin have been injected in DBA/2J mice during a light-dark discrimination learning, in the Y water maze. From the analysis of the performances inside each session and between two consecutive sessions, an impairment in the long term memory consolidation processes of the opiates injected animals has been evident, as compared to saline injected controls. The results are discussed on the basis of the dualistic concept of memory, and of recent neurophysiological acquisitions on the REM phase of sleep, and its relationship with opiate administration.
