Histochemical observations have been made by the Häusler technique, as modified by Hansson, on the localization of carbonic anhydrase activity in the gastric cells during the development of the chick. The enzyme activity is always present, from the beginning of development until the hatching, both in the epithelial cells lining the lumen and in the cells of the submucosal zymogenic glands, whose function is still a matter of discussion.
