A morphological and histological study of the thymus and of the bursa Fabricii of young chicks (Gallus gallus, Wyandotte race) submitted to X-ray treatment (600 r) was undertaken for comparative purposes. The two irradiated lymphoid organs displayed different histological patterns. Picnotic lymphocytes were found in the most peripheral cortical region of the thymus (where small lymphocytes represent the majority of the cells) only during the first 3 days after irradiation. In the bursa, instead, the picnotic lymphocytes could be observed until the end of the experiment (30 days), both in the cortical and in the medullar region. The lymphocytic repopulation is effected by the small cortical lymphocytes, at least in the thymus. The morphological modifications of the Hassall corpuscles and of the epithelial cysts were also studied. These cysts may have different characters, paticularly the "involution epithelial cysts" in the bursa of Fabricius.
