Sunto

The properties of mediated transport have been studied under different metabolic conditions, on the retina of the rat, in vitro. In the case of glycine and glutamate the transport system is affected in terms of efficiency by glucose and oxygen, in the retina as well as in brain slices. Furthermore the influx of the two amino acids shows the same metabolic pattern. Conversely, the highest values of lysine uptake have been measured when the retinas were incubated in absence of glucose and oxygen. A possible interpretation of the data is discussed on the base of the peculiar metabolic pattern of the retina.
