The benthic fauna of the east coast of the Gulf of Taranto includes 60 species (out of 170) which have not been found on the west coast. Half of these species live on the bathyal muds between 200 and 1200 m depth; four Polychaetes are new for the Mediterranean. The alcohol weight of the biomas for sandy bottom was found to be 10,5 g/m2 between 10 and 40 m and 4,6 g/m2 between 40-100 m, which a minimun of 1,6 g/m2 for the Branchtostoma coarse and in 20—40 m depth. The biomas values for mud bottom between 40—100 m depth are 10,2 g/m2, between 100-200 m 13,8 g/m2 and 7,2 g/m2 between 200-1200 m depth.
