The influence of LiCl and NaSCN on RNA and protein syntheses in chick embryos has been studied. Chick embryos at various early stages were in vitro-explanted according to New, treated with 0.01 M LiCl or 0.006M NaSCN, and put in culture in the presence of tritiated uridine or leucine. The incorporation in treated embryos and in controls has been studied with an autoradiographic method. The tritiated uridine incorporation in LiCl-treated embryos is less than the incorporation in the controls. The same thing occurs in NaSCN-treated embryos. The incorporation of tritiated leucine is less in LiCl-treated embryos, but NaSCN-treated embryos do not show appreciable differences from the controls. These results confirm that lithium inhibits protein synthesis during the first stage of chick embryonic development. The NaSCN, instead, inhibits RNA synthesis but does not inhibit protein synthesis. This discovery seems to agree with Ranzi's interpretation that the alterations induced by NaSCN are related to an increase of amino-acid pool, an increase induced by protein dénaturation, the effect of NaSCN action.
