Female Swiss albino mice were mated with normal males. Liver cells obtained from seventeen-day pregnant mice, either normal or given i.p. 107 Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells one week earlier, were injected i.v. into lethally x-irradiated recipients. The spleen colonizing capacity of the "tumoral" liver was significantly decreased as compared to that of normal controls. The present data confirm our previous findings on the inhibitory efiect of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma on the colony forming power of the bone marrow cells of the host. They support our working hypothesis, that tumor cells produce some "soluble factor" that goes across the placenta and is capable of interfering with stem cell differentiation in to hemopoietic and lymphopoietic tissues.
