The genetic basis of the albicans and discretum forms of Sphaeroma serratum has been studied utilizing two populations from the isle of Capri and from Naples respectively. The genetical data collected from our crosses [20 CaprixCapri, 18 CaprixNaples, 10(CaprixNaples)xCapri, 10(CaprixNaples)xNaples and 9(CaprixNaples)x(CaprixNaples)] suggest, at least for these populations, a polyfactorial determination of albicans and discretum. These results agree with the continuous variation between these two forms, observed in many Mediterranean populations, and they support the hypothesis that albicans cannot be considered as a separate form, but has to be included in the normal range of variability of discretum.
