The crystal structures of phases formed by the rare-earth metals with tin near the equiatomic composition were examined by micrographical and X—ray powder method. Sixteen new compounds with the M5Sn4 and M11Sn10 stoichiometric formulas were found. The M5Sn4 phases (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy) crystallize in the orthorhombic Sm5Ge4 structure type; the M11Sn10 phases (M = Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm) crystallize in the body-centered tetragonal Ho11Ge10 type. Lattice constants of all these compounds and intensity data for La5Sn4 and Dy11Sn10 are given. The geometrical relationships among Cr5B3, Sn5Ge4 and Zr5Si4 structure types are shown.
