The unfertilized egg of Mytilus breaks when submitted to strong centrifugation. Two kinds of fragments are obtained: one lighter hyaline fragment and one dark heavier fragment. Both fragments when fertilized, develop. The cleavage pattern is normal. A polar lobe is formed as usual. Larvae develop from both fragments and show a normal morphology with the typical apical tufts.
