Sunto

A higly selected mixed culture of very few species of fecal microorganisms effects in vitro the complete transformation of cholic acid with a remarkable yield of only deoxycholic acid. This culture shows optimal rates of transformation, under anaerobic conditions, at neutral and alkaline pH with growing cells and washed cells. It is also able to effect 7 $\beta$-dehydroxylation of 7-epicholic acid accumulating deoxycholic acid, while it is unable to 7 $\alpha$-dehydroxylate chenodeoxycholic acid. The same culture also yields deoxycholic acid from 7-chetodeoxycholic acid and taurocholic acids. The numerous strains isolated from this culture are only ascribible to six microbial species: two to genus Clostridium, three to genus Streptococcus, one to genus Micrococcus. The morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of the above strains are reported; their taxonomy and activity on cholic, 7-chetodeoxychoIic and deoxycholic acids have been examined.
