Alkaline Denaturation of DNA as a Phase Transition. As demonstrated in previous papers by Ageno, Dore and Frontali, the process of alkaline denaturation results in a deprotonation of the hydrogen bridges between complementary bases. In this paper the equilibrium of the deprotonation reaction is considered at a pH lower than that of dénaturation. A simple formula is derived which gives the denaturation pH as a function of the temperature and ionic strength of the solutions. The width of transition is of the order of 1/N , N being the total number of deprotonable sites in a DNA molecule.
