Karyological studies have been carried out on Trocheta subviridis and T. bykowskii, two related species of the family Erpobdellidae. The subviridis specimens used in this work were collected in Great Britain; those of bykowskii were collected in the Alpi Apuane (Tuscany): the presence of T. bykowskii in peninsular Italy was unknown before. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis have been described. The chromosome number, ascertained in both species, is n = 11, 2n = 22. However some differences regarding the morphology and the size of the single chromosomes and the mean chiasma frequency have been noticed between subviridis and bykowskii.
