Paracentrotus lividus eggs treated before the insemination with the mercurial compound mersalyl, with the aim of obtaining a high percentage of polyspermy, produces in sea water during the first few minutes after the fertilization, a decrease of pH (caused by the production of fertilization acid), the rate and entity of which are quite similar to those of controls. Consequently it seems that only one spermatozoon, the first one which activates the egg, would be sufficient to produce the complete release of the fertilization acid.
