The effect of X-rays upon the distribution of acid phosphatase, a lysosomial enzyme, was studied in young mice thymuses. It was pointed out that one day after irradiation the cortex displays a higher acid phosphatase activity, while the values referring to the medullar enzymatic activity remain much lower. It was seen that this enzyme is localized in all the Hassall bodies of the irradiated thymuses; the hypothesis that the latter may take part in processes of fagocytosis is discussed here.
