We have studied the luminescent behaviour of the four chelate forms of Cr(III) with EDTA, stable in different ranges of pH: I [CrYH(H₂O)] (pH > 2); II [CrYH₂O)]^- (2 < pH < 8); III [CrYOH)]^- (8 < pH < 12); IV [CrY(OH)₂)]^≣ (pH > 12). The luminescence spectra are in agreement with a phosphorescent emission $^{2}E_{g} \to ^{4}A_{2g}$, and are characterized, for I and II, by a band at 14,3 kK, and for IV, by a band at 13,5 kK, while the form III is luminescence-inactive. The different observed emission intensities give a good evidence of the strict dependence of the luminescent behaviour on structural changes in the coordination sphere of Cr(III) chelates.
