In order to clarify the taxonomy of the genus Asellus we have analyzed the chromosome complement of Asellus (Proasellus) meridianus, collected from two different sources in England. Vandel has reported a kariotype of 2n = 16, n = 8; on the contrary, Muldal observed 2n = 10, n = 5 chromosomes in this species. We have also observed a chromosome number 2n = 10, n = 5. All chromosomes are metacentric or submetacentric, sexual chromosomes are not recognizable, the chiasma frequency is about 1,1 per bivalent. It is not easy, at present, to propose an explanation of the kariotype evolution in the genus Asellus.
