Bergapten (5—methoxy—psoralen), which forms complexes in darkness with native DNA and, by irradiation at 3.655 Å, photoreacts giving a C4-cyclo-addition reaction with the pyrimidine bases of the macromolecule, forms complexes and photoreacts only in an extremely reduced extent with the ribosomal RNA (having mainly a random coil structure) and also with s-RNA, which.rather has a completely ordered double helix structure, but structural parameters different from those of native DNA. It is evident that furocoumarins for making complexes and for photoreacting with nucleic acids need critical structural parameters of the macromolecule, such as those present in the B-form of native DNA.
