The behaviour of Eu and Yb with Ni, Cu, Ag and Au has been investigated over the composition MX5 and some new compounds have been found, all with the CaCu5 structure type, namely: EuNi5, YbNi5, EuCu5, YbCu5, EuAg5, EuAu5. Their crystal structure and interatomic distances are briefly discussed together with those of the corresponding (Ca, Sr, Ba)X5 isomorphous compounds. In most cases Eu and Yb behave as divalent elements while only in MNi5 compounds do they show evidence for trivalency.
