The present research was intended to test if tyroxin would exert any toxic effect on tissue expiants cultivated in vitro. To this purpose tails from larval newts (Triturus taeniatus) at the stage 59-60, according to Glückshon, were treated with tyroxin Roche diluted 1 : 1.000.000 during 3-6-9 days of culture. The control tails were left to grow in a tyroxin-lacking medium for the same period of time. The results suggested that tyroxin does not have any toxic effect on the tissue expiants; in fact it does not induce any degeneration in the tails cultivated in vitro. Extensive histological changes of the caudal tissues, absolutely comparable with those obtained during normal metamorphosis could be observed. No one of these changes was observed in the tails grown in a tyroxin-lacking medium.
