The ultrastructure of the pineal eye of lampreys has been studied by electron microscopy. Three cell types have been recognized as the chief components of the retina, namely photoreceptors, supporting cells and ganglion cells. The photoreceptors are of ciliary type. Supporting cells contain two peculiar cytoplasmic structures: mieloid bodies, similar to those described in the pigmentary epithelium of the lateral eyes, and myelin figures, whose origin has been discussed.
