We have studied the infrared spectrum of mercuric chloride in the crystalline state, dissolved in several organic solvents. The crystal spectrum is discussed using crystallographic data. For the solutions the shifts of absorption frequencies from the vapour values are a means of detecting interactions with solvents and stating their relative energies.
