The chemical consequences following the beta decay of a tritium atom contained in an organic molecule have been studied with a tracer technique based on the use of multilabeled molecules, such as methane-T4. When the CT4 is allowed to decay in systems at atmospheric pressure the labeled decay fragments react with the surrounding molecules giving tritiated products that have been analyzed by radio gas chromatography. The results, combined with the available mass spectrometric information on the decay-induced fragmentation of monotritiated methane, have been used to derive a detailed model of the chemical reactions induced by the nuclear event. The results suggest that the decay of multilabeled molecules can afford a valuable tool to study the reactions of ionic species in systems at high pressure or even in the liquid state.
