An examination of the infrared spectra, in the C = 0 stretching region, of the acetaldehyde adsorbed on silica alumina, detected, on a catalyst at 200°C, the appearance of a band referable to adsorbed crotonaldehyde. After studying the intensity of this band in function of the temperature, we have to come to the conclusion that crotonaldehyde is present, in an adsorbed form, only when the catalyst is at a higher temperature than the room.
