Sunto

The frequencies of P^A, P^B and P^C alleles at the locus for red cell acidphosphatase have been determined in 243 individuals living in the province of Cagliari. This has been highly malaric until recently and a high frequency of G-6-PD deficiency and thalassemia genes has been observed in its population. Frequencies of the alleles of P genes are identical to those found in Rome. The results strongly argue against the hypothesis that the malarial endemia had some effect on the maintenance of this polymorphism in Sardinia. Results of linkage studies between $\beta$-thalassemia and red cell acid phosphatase genes are also reported.
