The infrared spectra of gaseous acetic anhydride on solid aluminum chloride catalyst are investigated to afford a spectroscopic contribution to knowledge of the acetylation mechanism by acetic anhydride with aluminum chloride. Under the experimental conditions used by the Authors, the two ionic species formed by the dissociation of the anhydride molecules adsorbed on the surface of aluminum chloride are acetylium ion (CH3CO)+ and acetate ion (CH3COO)- ; indissociated molecules of acetic anhydride adsorbed on the catalyst are also present. The similar adsorbing processes on the surface of aluminuni chloride between acetic anhydride and acetyl chloride are discussed,
