1) A study on the comparative biochemistry of natural amino acids has been carried out on an elasmobranch (Scyllium canicula) and two teleosts (Mugil cephalus, Gobius niger jozo). Evidence is presented of deamination in these vertebrates for the first time. 2) Brain, liver and kidney of the above species have been found to deaminate various L-amino acids to varying degrees. 3) L-aspartic acid and L-hystidine were generally found to be the most active amino acids on the basis of ammonia production in tissue homogenates. The activity on L-aspartate is worthy of note, in that it has never before been found in animal tissue.
